SUSTAINABILITY IS RESPONSIBILITY

Norway is one of the countries that invests most in sustainability. It has the highest percentage of electric cars of any country in the world and Norway is on its path becoming a carbon-neutral nation by 2050. Norway’s capital Oslo was crowned the European Green Capital 2019. Oslo city center is almost entirely car-free, with vastly expanded pedestrian and biking lanes; 56 percent of all public transportation is powered by renewable energy, including biogas produced from biowaste and city sewage.
Norway has ambitious plans towards sustainable tourism on its agenda as well. The impact of cruise tourism has been one of the toughest challenges faced. To solve this issue, Hurtigruten has developed new hybrid-powered expedition ships that reduce fuel consumption by 20 percent using an environmentally sustainable hybrid technology.
A new cool and sustainable ring-shaped hotel will welcome its guests in 2021 – the Svart Hotel above the Arctic Circle. It will be world’s first energy-positive hotel – meaning it will produce more energy than it consumes, the hotel plans to use renewable energy with the aim of making as little environmental footprint on the beautiful northern nature as possible.
There has been a strong focus on greener hospitality services all over. Many hotels feature organic and locallly grown products on their menus. For example, Scandic hotels have decided to say no to genetically modified foods and serve organic breakfast and fair-trade coffee.
And all the above is only a part of an attempt by Western Europe's biggest producer of oil and gas to green its economy. Via Hansa & Borealis is also exploring the possibilities of sustainable tourism products and supporting local businesses as well as gathering expertise of our customers about their experiences and practices of sustainable tourism. If you would like to share your experience and tell us more about your sustainability policies, you are welcome to write to Via Hansa & Borealis headquarters in Riga. Together we can change the world!
