KAUNAS – EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2022

KAUNAS – EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2022
10.01.2022

As of January 22nd 2022, the Lithuania city of Kaunas along with two other cities – Esch-sur-Alzette in Luxembourg and Novi Sad in Serbia – is holding the title of European Capital of Culture for one year, 12 years after the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, was European Capital of Culture in 2012. Kaunas, which is dating back to the 10th century, is the country’s second largest city with almost 600.000 inhabitants. It was the temporary capital of Lithuania during the two world wars and has changed dramatically into a modern and smart city over the last three decades. And in preparation for its role of European Capital of Culture, Kaunas has been implementing the largest cultural project to date with the motto “from Temporary to Contemporary”, coming back into the spotlight also as a culturally vibrant European city.

Kaunas as the European Capital of Culture features a rich cultural program with over 1000 events – 40 festivals, 60 exhibitions, over 250 performing art events and more than 250 concerts – putting Kaunas on the world map as the city to visit in 2022. Via Hansa & Borealis is offering special programs connected with Kaunas 2022, is holding hotel allocations for the main events, and will be happy to assist with tickets and information.
